HC Deb 28 October 1946 vol 428 c289
72. Mr. Bossom

asked the Minister of Transport why the large amount of timber employed in the temporary wooden bridges that were erected to meet possible war emergencies is not now being released to the Ministry of Works for use in connection with temporary or permanent housing.

Mr. Barnes

Some of the temporary wooden bridges for which I am responsible are still required for traffic. Arrangements have already been made for the rest to be demolished and the timber used directly for housing or surrendered to the Timber Control.

Mr. Bossom

Can the Minister say how soon these bridges can be demolished, and the timber used, because scaffolding timber is now very unsatisfactory, and this would be eminently useful for the purpose?

Mr. Barnes

I can answer the first part of the supplementary question. Tenders have been invited, and are now in.

Mr. Bossom

When will anything be done?
