HC Deb 23 October 1946 vol 427 cc1635-6
5. Mr. Hobson

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what steps the Government are taking to absorb in the services of the various departments the employees of the ex-Shanghai Municipal Council who are of British nationality.

Mr. Bevin

In view of the circumstances in which these men lost their employment, I have interested myself on their behalf in consultation with my colleagues. The total number of men involved in this country is approximately 250, of whom 160 are police. Approximately 100 of these 160 ex-policemen have already been found or offered employment under other Government Departments. Of the 90 who are not ex-policemen, the Foreign Office ascertained last May that 54 were still seeking employment. Their names were brought to the notice of those Departments of His Majesty's Government likely to be interested, and a number have since secured employment under some of these Departments.

Mr. Hobson

Will my right hon. Friend make representations to the Minister of Labour, because there are still many of these men registering at the Appointments Bureau, of whom the Ministry of Labour have no special knowledge?

Mr. Bevin

I certainly will.
