§ 57. Brigadier Lowasked the Minister of Food why coin meter collectors who have to carry loads varying between 40 and 70 lbs. during their daily visits to houses in the course of their duty, are not classed as manual workers, whereas postmen, who only carry approximately 35 lbs. loads, are so classed; and whether he will now include coin meter collectors in the category of manual workers.
Mr. StraeheyI cannot necessarily accept the comparison which the hon. and gallant Member makes, but if coin meter collectors as a class are regularly employed for not less than 22 hours a week in carrying loads of 40 to 70 pounds, the matter will be considered on receipt of an appeal, with full information, through the appropriate channel as laid down in paragraph 4 of B.M.W.1.
§ Brigadier LowDoes not the right hon. Gentleman admit that appeals have been made to him from many channels in the last three months or so to have these matters considered?
§ Mr. StracheyNo, no appeal has arrived at the Ministry from the Trades Union Congress committee, which is the channel to which I was referring, but no doubt that could be done.
§ Brigadier LowPerhaps I could give the matter expedition by presenting the copy of the letter?
§ Mr. StracheyCertainly, Sir.
