HC Deb 21 October 1946 vol 427 c1301
48. Mr. Stokes

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster how much newsprint is now allocated to the British zone in Germany for German papers; how this compares with the amount allocated on or about 15th May, 1946; and whether he has any information as to the amount being used at the present time in the Soviet zone.

Mr. J. Hynd

In September newsprint deliveries to the German Press were 1,420 tons against 1,160 tons in May. I have no information as to the amount of newsprint now being used in the Soviet zone.

Mr. Stokes

May I ask my hon. Friend whether he will discover from his representative in Berlin the amount the Soviet people are using, because it is evident that there is an almost unlimited supply of newsprint, and there is no reason why the amount allocated to our own zone should not be made at least equal to theirs?

Mr. Hynd

I shall be pleased to try and persuade our Soviet friends to give us actual details.
