HC Deb 21 October 1946 vol 427 c1300
77. Mr. Austin

asked the Minister of Supply what are the bases for the prices charged for new motorcars under the authority of his Department, showing the apportionment in wages, materials, overheads and profits.

Mr. Wilmot

These prices are not subject to approval by my Department. Details as to their make-up is not available and could only be obtained by a very elaborate investigation,

Mr. Austin

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman whether he will not look into this question in view of the exorbitant prices charged for new cars and the enormous profits earned by the motorcar companies?

Mr. Wilmot

No, Sir, I have no reason to suppose or suspect that the prices are unreasonable, having regard to the present costs.
