§ 69. Sir Stanley Reedasked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether an author has yet been selected to prepare a narrative of India's war record for publication; what are the terms of his remuneration; and the source from which the expenditure will be met.
§ The Under-Secretary of State for India (Mr. Arthur Henderson)I am informed by the Government of India that arrangements have been made for Mr. Compton Mackenzie to write a short popular history of India's war effort. The terms of his remuneration are a matter between him and his publishers. Any expense to be incurred from the Defence Department Vote will be limited to the payment of part of the author's expenses.
§ Sir S. ReedWould the hon. and learned Gentleman say whether this author has been selected because of that distinguished contribution to English letters, "The Windsor Tapestry"?
§ Mr. HendersonNo, Sir. If the hon. Member really wants to know why Mr. Compton Mackenzie was selected, perhaps he will put down a Question.
§ Mr. Ronald ChamberlainWould it not be more appropriate to ask an Indian to prepare the narrative?
§ Mr. HendersonThis matter is in the hands of the Government of India.
