HC Deb 04 November 1946 vol 428 c1053
69. Sir Stanley Reed

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether an author has yet been selected to prepare a narrative of India's war record for publication; what are the terms of his remuneration; and the source from which the expenditure will be met.

The Under-Secretary of State for India (Mr. Arthur Henderson)

I am informed by the Government of India that arrangements have been made for Mr. Compton Mackenzie to write a short popular history of India's war effort. The terms of his remuneration are a matter between him and his publishers. Any expense to be incurred from the Defence Department Vote will be limited to the payment of part of the author's expenses.

Sir S. Reed

Would the hon. and learned Gentleman say whether this author has been selected because of that distinguished contribution to English letters, "The Windsor Tapestry"?

Mr. Henderson

No, Sir. If the hon. Member really wants to know why Mr. Compton Mackenzie was selected, perhaps he will put down a Question.

Mr. Ronald Chamberlain

Would it not be more appropriate to ask an Indian to prepare the narrative?

Mr. Henderson

This matter is in the hands of the Government of India.
