HC Deb 04 November 1946 vol 428 cc1029-30
15. Sir W. Smithers

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been called to the case of Mr. William Nisbet, who required 25s. worth of salvage wood; and, in view of the fact that the Timber Control sent him five sets of forth 3 /8 /C.P.L., each consisting of three sheets and each measuring 17 inches by eight inches and that, when Mr. Nisbet had filled them up in triplicate and returned them, a note was received saying that a licence was not necessary, particulars of which have been sent to him, if he will take disciplinary action against the official concerned.

Mr. Marquand

My right hon. and learned Friend has written to the hon. Member about this case. A mistake was made, due to a misunderstanding in the Department, to which the attention of the official concerned has been drawn. I regret that Mr. William Nisbet suffered this most unusual trouble.

Sir W. Smithers

Is the Minister aware that that letter was one of the lamest excuses ever written, and will he make an example in this case and dismiss this inexperienced official, so that in future we do not have a repetition of this frustration and delay?
