HC Deb 28 May 1946 vol 423 cc994-5
84. Mr. Bossom

asked the Minister of Labour how many trainees in the building industry have completed their training and are now gainfully employed since the Services demobilisation plans became effective.

Mr. Isaacs

On 6th May, 2,403 trainees in the building industry had completed their training in Government training centres and had been placed in the industry. In addition 259 men are in course of being placed.

Mr. Bossom

Could the right hon. Gentleman state if the facilities today have increased considerably over those available to make these men eligible to go into industry?

Mr. Isaacs

Yes, Sir. Not only have facilities increased substantially as far as new premises are concerned, but many others are being prepared, and the scheme of working a double shift in the training centres has come into operation with the consent of the trainees concerned. Another scheme of completing part of the training on the job has also come into operation.

Mr. Marples

Is there a long waiting list to go into the training centres?

Mr. Isaacs

Yes, Sir. There is still a long waiting list, and although we are getting a number in every week the list continues to grow. We hope to clear it as soon as other premises are available.
