HC Deb 25 March 1946 vol 421 cc7-8
17. Mr. W. Shepherd

asked the Minister of War Transport why he proposes to continue the laying of wooden sets as against new and more suitable forms of road surfacing.

Mr. Barnes

It is not likely that wood block paving will be laid on trunk roads, for which I am responsible as highway authority. As regards the suitability of wood block paving generally, I would remind the hon. Member of the answer I gave him on 4th February.

Mr. Shepherd

Is not the Minister aware that a large part of central London is laid with wooden block paving which might have been suitable 50 years ago, but which is dangerous now, and if the Minister wants proof of that, will he come round with me in my car?
