HC Deb 25 March 1946 vol 421 c38
100. Mr. Vernon Bartlett

asked the Minister of Food whether he will give an estimate of the cargo space taken up by imported eggs compared with the space that would be required by foodstuffs necessary to produce the same number of eggs in this country.

The Minister of Food (Sir Benjamin Smith)

During 1945, 50,700 nett tons of shell eggs, taking up approximately 6,084,000 cubic feet of cargo space, were imported. To produce the same weight of eggs in this country it is estimated that 380,250 tons of feeding stuffs, requiring some 19,000,000 cubic feet of cargo space, would have been necessary.
