HC Deb 25 March 1946 vol 421 cc6-7
13. Professor Savory

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what steps he proposes to take under Article 1 of the Treaty of Mutual Assistance of 19th October, 1939, between Great Britain and Turkey in view of the recent concentration of troops on the Turco-Bulgarian frontier.

Mr. McNeil

None, Sir. The Article in question engages His Majesty's Government to help Turkey in the event of her being involved in hostilities with a European Power in consequence of aggression by that Power against Turkey, and I have no reason to believe that any such aggression is likely to take place.

Professor Savory

Will the Minister make inquiries, both at Ankara and Istanbul, as to whether the facts stated in the Question are not correct?

Mr. McNeil

I have replied to the Question.

Professor Savory

I am asking about armed forces on the frontier.

Mr. McNeil

We have our own sources of information, but the Question was framed in relation to the Treaty, and I have replied in relation to that.

Vice-Admiral Taylor

Might not the forces on that frontier be a threat to peace?
