HC Deb 21 March 1946 vol 420 cc2023-4
34. Mr. Orr-Ewing

asked the Minister of Health whether, in view of the in creased cost of advertising, he will consider amending the Health Resorts and Watering Places Act of 1936 and the Local Authorities (Publicity) Act of 1931, in order to encourage the tourist industry.

Mr. Bevan

I am afraid I can hold out no hope of legislation in this matter in the near future.

Mr. Orr-Ewing

Does the Minister realise that while he may be forced by other matters to defer legislation, the tourist industry in this country is bound to suffer in view of the great increased cost of advertising, and will he look into this matter again?

Mr. Bevan

I doubt very much whether the tourist industry is suffering from an absence of people knowing of the facilities which are available. I should have thought it was largely due to the fact that people are unable to avail themselves of the existing facilities.

Mr. Orr-Ewing

Does not the right hon. Gentleman ever look ahead in these matters?

Mr. Bevan

When the contingency arises we shall probably be able to deal with it.
