HC Deb 07 March 1946 vol 420 cc189-490
36. Major Sir Jocelyn Lucas

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Depart- ment if he is aware that persons born in the Channel Islands and now resident in this country, have to obtain a passport and permit to return to or visit the islands and that this passport and permit is only operative for one month; and what steps will he take to remedy this injustice.

Mr. Ede

The present system has been retained at the request of the Insular Authorities for the reason which I explained in reply to a Question on 1st November by my hon. Friend the Member for Rothwell (Mr. T. J. Brooks). Visits are not necessarily limited to one month. The progress made in improving the conditions in the Islands is such that I hope it will very soon be possible to abolish the control of travel.
