HC Deb 06 March 1946 vol 420 cc326-7
40. Mr. Edelman

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what further action he proposes to take, following the U.S. Note to His Majesty's Government suggesting a joint démarche with France to the Government of General Franco.

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Ernest Bevin)

The hon. Member will now have seen the text of the joint statement on Spain which has been issued by His Majesty's Government in conjunction with the Governments of the United States of America and France.

Mr. Cocks

In view of the fact that its terms have not been published in Spain, will the right hon. Gentleman take steps to have it broadcast in the Spanish language to the Spanish people?

Mr. Bevin

I understood that it had gone over the B.B.C.

Colonel Erroll

Has His Majesty's Minister in Madrid sent a copy to the Spanish Government?

Mr. Bevin

Certainly, Sir.

Mr. Warbey

Has the right hon. Gentleman come to any conclusion on the matter being referred to the Security Council?

Mr. Bevin

I am very doubtful whether it comes within the Charter at all.
