HC Deb 04 March 1946 vol 420 c28
60. Colonel Erroll

asked the Minister of Agriculture what policy the Government intend to adopt to stimulate the cultivation of additional vegetables by allotment holders; and to what kinds of vegetables should allotment holders give most attention.

Mr. T. Williams

Local authorities throughout the country have been urged to take all possible steps to maintain, so long as the present world food shortage persists, the services instituted during the war to stimulate and advise allotment holders. The crops which should be grown in allotments and gardens are those recommended in "Dig for Victory" leaflets Nos. 1 and 23, copies of which I am sending to the hon. and gallant Member.

Colonel Erroll

Does the right hon. Gentleman realise that allotment holders at the present time are completely in the dark as to what they should do, and will he organise some really effective nationwide publicity?

Mr. Williams

I am sure the allotment holders are not completely in the dark, since I broadcast to them a week on Friday night informing them of what was their duty.

Mr. De la Bè re

That has left them still in the dark.
