asked the Minister of Agriculture what steps are being taken to ensure that the best farm land or allotment land is not being used for housing when alternative sites are available.

My Rural Land Utilisation Officers, and the Regional Planning Officers of my right hon. Friend the Minister of Town and Country Planning, are in constant consultation with local authorities and are taking all possible steps to ensure that good agricultural land is not taken for development where suitable alternative sites are available.
