§ 17. Mr. Boyd-Carpenterasked the Minister of Fuel and Power what action his Department is taking to increase the use of peat as fuel in this country.
§ Mr. GaitskellOur regional officers have instructions to give all the assistance they can, on such matters, for example, as the supply of plant, to commercial peat producers who seek their aid. In addition, the Ministry has itself begun the production of peat fuel on a small scale in Dumfriesshire. We are also considering proposals for large scale production on a highly mechanised basis, though my right hon. Friend is not yet satisfied that this is an economic proposition.
§ Mr. Charles WilliamsWill the large scale production be by the Ministry or by private enterprise?
§ Mr. GaitskellBy the Ministry.
§ 27. Colonel Stoddart-Scottasked the Minister of Fuel and Power if, in view of the danger of shortage of coal next winter and his unwillingness to permit German prisoners of war to work in British coal pits, he will employ them cutting peat throughout the summer so that the people will have some additional fuel for their homes.
§ Mr. GaitskellYes, Sir. German prisoners of war are already employed on peat cutting in this country, and we intend to increase the numbers engaged on this work.
