HC Deb 04 June 1946 vol 423 c1800
40. Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Minister of Labour the number of registered male unemployed in the Storno-way employment exchange area at the most recent representative date; and the total for the Outer Hebrides as a whole.

Mr. Ness Edwards

At 8th April, the latest date for which figures are at present available, the number of unemployed insured males, aged 14 and under 65 years, suitable for ordinary employment, on the registers of Stornoway Employment Exchange was 1,945. I regret that separate statistics are not available as to the numbers of unemployed persons in other areas of the Outer Hebrides.

Mr. MacMillan

In view of the alarming and rapidly rising number of unemployed will the Minister say whether the Government have any policy other than sending the rest of the Polish army up to Scotland?
