HC Deb 04 June 1946 vol 423 cc1799-800
39. Lieut-Commander Clark Hutchison

asked the Minister of Labour the total number of applications for grants which have been made since 5th March, 1946, up to the latest available date by Service and ex-Service personnel under the Further Education and Training Scheme; and the number of these applications which have been accepted and the number rejected.

Mr. Edwards

From 1st March to 31st May, 1946, 16,184 applications were received from Service and ex-Servicemen and women for assistance under the Further Education and Training Scheme. The numbers of awards and rejections in respect of these applications are not readily available and could only be obtained by a disproportionate expenditure of time which would not be justified. The numbers of awards and rejections actually made during this period which relate to these and earlier applications were 10,346 and 2,129 respectively.

Lieut.-Commander Hutchison

Is the Minister satisfied that the scheme is making good progress since there are complaints of lagging?

Mr. Edwards

On the whole we are satisfied that equity is being given to the applicants.
