HC Deb 04 June 1946 vol 423 c1786
4. Mr. Bossom

asked the Minister of Works who, in future, is to be responsible for the architectural upkeep of Hurstmonceux Castle as an historic monument.

Mr. Tomlinson

Hurstmonceux Castle will be under the control of the Admiralty, who will consult my Department in connection with the maintenance of the historic portions of the building.

Mr. Bossom

Is it not very important that this most historic building, one of the very best of its kind that we have in this country, should be under the control of the Ancient Monuments Department and not left to the Admiralty alone to deal with it? Will the right hon. Gentleman not reverse the consultations the other way?

Mr. Tomlinson

I will look into it. I do not know which of them is the most important, but I know one is.
