HC Deb 16 July 1946 vol 425 cc1047-8
57. Mr. Ayles

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the success of the Birmingham Municipal Bank with its advantages to citizens desiring to own their own houses, and the financing of municipal schemes, he will take steps to enable other municipal bodies to have powers to establish similar institutions.

Mr. Dalton

On the whole, having regard to recent developments, including the facilities provided by the National Savings Movement, and the very cheap rates at which money is now being lent by the Government to local authorities, I do not think it is necessary to encourage the establishment of further municipal banks.
