HC Deb 16 July 1946 vol 425 cc1042-3
47. Mr. Edelman

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether the available labour force in the British zone of Germany is adequate to gather in the harvest.

The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (Mr. John Hynd)

Yes, Sir.

Mr. Edelman

As an additional safeguard, would my hon. Friend return those non-Nazi prisoners of war to Germany as soon as possible, so as to meet the requirements of their own harvest?

Mr. Hynd

There are no additional safeguards required in this matter. There is no difficulty whatever in providing adequate labour for the harvest. As will be readily understood, because of the comparatively unsalubrious conditions of employment in the towns in Germany, they are only too anxious to work in the harvest.
