§ 4. Mr. Morleyasked the Minister of Education if she can now state the number of classes with 50 or more on the roll, and the number of classes with between 40 and 50 on the roll in schools under her jurisdiction.
§ Miss Wilkinson1 am sorry that I cannot at present give the figures. The returns from each school, which had to be foregone during the war, have only just been resumed and the shortage of staff and pressure of work in my Department will make it some time before they can be collated.
§ Mr. LipsonCannot the right hon. Lady allocate some of these applicants to schools where they can get useful experience, and thus help to relieve the pressure on those teachers who have 50 children in a class?
§ Miss WilkinsonSo far as we can, we have used applicants in that way. I would point out that much of the work which has to be done is highly skilled, and that by the time we have trained these people to be of use, the colleges will be ready for them. There is the further point, that there is considerable pressure on building.
