HC Deb 28 February 1946 vol 419 c2107
63. Major Legge-Bourke

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will consider making it possible to claim back tax on all wages paid for domestic work out of the residue of taxed income.

Mr. Dalton

No, Sir.

Major Legge-Bourke

Does not the Chancellor agree that unless wages of domestic workers are made comparable with those of factory workers, people will never go back into domestic service? How does he expect them to be comparable with taxation as it is at present?

Mr. Dalton

It is not in the national interest to divert workers from factories into domestic work.
