HC Deb 28 February 1946 vol 419 cc2103-4
58. Mr. King

asked the Minister of Labour what steps he is taking to remove the dissatisfaction which exists among apprentices controlled by his Plymouth office over the way in which deferment is granted and withheld.

Mr. Isaacs

1 am not aware of any dissatisfaction among apprentices at Plymouth, but I know that apprentices in Falmouth are in some difficulty in attending classes that would enable them to satisfy all the qualifying conditions for deferment on account of apprenticeship. I understand that His Majesty's inspector of education has been in consultation with the local education authority with a view to improving the facilities available in the district.

Mr. King

Is my right hon. Friend aware that in many cases apprentices who have finished their apprenticeship are not being called up, whereas others in the middle of their apprenticeship are being called up? It is causing very great hardship; can he alleviate it?

Mr. Isaacs

If the hon. Member will be good enough to send particulars to me, I will have them examined.
