HC Deb 26 February 1946 vol 419 c1735
40. Mr. Murray

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power if he will state the number of collieries now working in the county of Durham and the number of persons employed at such collieries; how many collieries supply a full meal; how- many collieries supply only pies and sandwiches; how many collieries supply no food at all; and if he will give the personnel affected in each case.

Mr. Shinwell

There are 202 collieries working in Durham, employing 103,900 wage earners; of these, 108 collieries employing 94,400 men supply full meals; 22 employing 6,000 men supply subsidiary meals, such as pies and sandwiches; and 72 small collieries employing 3,500 men have no canteens

Mr. Murray

Is the Minister aware of the grave dissatisfaction amongst these people who cannot get any facilities to secure any of these extra meals that are being supplied at the present time?

Mr. Shinwell

The whole subject of miners' food rations is under consideration.
