HC Deb 26 February 1946 vol 419 c1742
66. Sir John Mellor

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will now give an estimate of the value of the assets of the Bank of England; and if he will apportion such value according to the nature of the assets.

Mr. Dalton

No, Sir.

Sir J. Mellor

Will the right hon. Gentleman say why not, considering that when the Bill was before the House he excused himself on the ground that he should not present this information to possible petitioners? As there is no longer anybody who could petition, could he not give the information now?

Mr. Dalton

If the hon. Member will look at what I said on 17th December, when the Bill was passing through the House, in col. 1955 of HANSARD, he will see that I then gave a full statement as to why I would not give this information.

Mr. Keeling

Would the right hon. Gentleman say whether the assets include any Japanese bonds?
