HC Deb 25 February 1946 vol 419 cc1555-6
47. Mr. Renton

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster the value in dollars of the wheat purchased by Great Britain from U.S.A. for consumption in the British zone in Germany between VE-Day and the latest date for which figures are available; and the value in dollars of the coal exported from the British zone during that period against payment in dollars.

The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (Mr. John Hynd)

Figures for the whole of the period since VE-Day are not available, as there was an initial period of combined supply responsibility during which all supplies imported into North-West Europe for civilian consumption were procured on a combined basis, pooled, and then allocated to the countries concerned. But from 1st November to 15th February the value of U.S. wheat and flour imported into the British Zone for civilian consumption was about 8½ million dollars out of a total import of cereals and flour of a value of approximately 23½ million dollars. The value in dollars of coal exported from the British Zone from VE-Day to the 15th February is about 54 million dollars. For the period from 1st November to 15th February it is about 33 million dollars.
