HC Deb 25 February 1946 vol 419 cc1536-7
5. Mr. Lipson

asked the Minister of Supply and of Aircraft Production why applications for posts in connection with the industrial development of atomic energy are restricted to the staff of his Department; and will he open the list to engineers and scientists with the Forces and with industrial firms and remove the present age limit of 30.

Mr. Wilmot

As many scientists and skilled engineers in Government service are finishing their present tasks, we have thought it right to invite applications for transfer to the posts immediately required for atomic energy work. In the future we shall also recruit through the examinations in the normal way. In addition, appointments without age limit from outside sources will be made where this is desirable.

Mr. Lipson

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman if his argument applies to men in the Forces? Why should not they be given the opportunity to apply for these posts? Does not he want the best men? Cannot he make the field as wide as possible?

Mr. Wilmot

Only people with outstanding qualifications for this work are being appointed.

Mr. Lipson

Will the Minister consider extending it to men who have been serving in the Forces?
