asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the sum of£150,000 in the Fiji estimates for 1946 has been provided for defence services; and why so large a sum is required.

The sum of£150,000 to which the hon. Member refers covers Special Services and Defence. The Special Services amount to£90,000, which include substantial amounts for certain food subsidies and for staff for surplus property disposal, Meteorological Services, etc. The remainder is allocated as follows: Fiji Military Forces,£60,500; Fiji R.N.V.R.,£500.
