HC Deb 02 December 1946 vol 431 c15
36. Mr. Sparks

asked the Minister of Transport if he will arrange for the restoration of missing and damaged Belisha beacons at pedestrian crossings, and arrange for their illumination after lighting-up time.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport (Mr. G. R. Strauss)

My right hon. Friend has urged the appropriate authorities to restore pedestrian crossings to their prewar condition as soon as possible. Shortage of materials is preventing the work being completed as quickly as he would like. The possibility of improving the visibility of pedestrian crossings, particularly during hours of darkness, is being considered.

Mr. Ellis Smith

Is my hon. Friend aware that a large number of motorists are not recognising the pedestrian crossings? Is it proposed to take any action in order to restore prewar courtesy in regard to these crossings?

Mr. Strauss

Yes, Sir, as soon as possible. I have myself made an appeal on the wireless to this end, and I hope that the public will gradually consider these crossings as of increasing importance from the point of view of road safety.
