HC Deb 02 December 1946 vol 431 cc25-6
47. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Agriculture if, in view of the fact that recent wage increases are inadequate to meet the advance in the price of milk, he will bring the costs of production into economic relation with the prices received by the farmers in order to get an increased supply.

The Minister of Agriculture (Mr. Thomas Williams)

If I am right in assuming that the hon. Member wishes me to change prices and not, as he suggests, costs of production, the answer is that I am not prepared to review the prices of particular farm products in between the reviews for which provision is made in the agreed procedure.

Sir W. Smithers

Has the right hon. Gentleman ever heard of, and, if not, will he study the implications of, the expression called "the vicious spiral"?
