HC Deb 02 December 1946 vol 431 cc34-5
102. Mr. R. A. Butler

asked the Undersecretary of State for India whether the casualties reported from Quetta on 1st September, Hansi, Hissar district, Punjab, on 28th September and Allahabad on 6th October are confirmed; if so, whether they were included in the casualty total notified to the House on 4th November; and why they were not included in the total most recently published.

Mr. A. Henderson

Communal rioting occurred at Quetta on 1st September, resulting in five deaths and 17 cases of injury; at Hansi on 28th September, resulting in one death and 25 cases of injury; and at Allahabad on 5th October, resulting in three deaths and nine cases of injury. The casualties at Hansi were in- cluded in the totals which I gave the House on 4th November, but not those at Quetta and Allahabad. The incident at Allahabad was not mentioned in the table circulated with the OFFICIAL REPORT on 18th November because it had not then been reported to the India Office. I regret that the incidents at Quetta and Hansi were not included owing to an oversight.

Mr. Butler

May I ask the Under-Secretary to do his utmost to see that all these incidents are reported to the House owing to the grave public anxiety in these matters?

Mr. Henderson

Yes, Sir, and I regret that it was not done in this case.
