HC Deb 10 April 1946 vol 421 c1925
58. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Minister of Food if he has an estimate of the increased quantity of bread in this country which would he made available if the extraction rate were lowered from 85 per cent. to 90 per cent.

Sir B. Smith

If the rate of extraction of flour from wheat were altered from 85 per cent. to 90 per cent. it would be in order to save wheat and the quantity of bread available in this country would not thereby be increased.

Mr. Freeman

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider arranging for part of this supply to be at the higher nutritional value and thereby not only get more bread but provide a higher nutritional value for those who want it?

Sir B. Smith

One has to consider also feeding stuffs for animals.
