HC Deb 09 April 1946 vol 421 c1792
52. Mr. I. J. Pitman

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, and when, he will raise the scales of pay of typists and of shorthand-typists in the Civil Service to bring them into line with those paid for comparable duties performed in other organisations owned and operated under the overriding control of the Government and, in particular, in the Bank of England; and whether the Government intend, Without discrimination, to maintain for all employees a just and fair employment policy throughout the whole field of comparable service both in Government departments and in organisations owned and generally controlled by the State.

Mr. Dalton

I do not accept the view that the Civil Service rates for these staffs, which have just been improved, are out of line with those paid by the Bank of England.

Mr. Pitman

Will the right hon. Gentleman give me an answer to the second part of my Question? Is he not aware that the differences are as much as 10s. a week?

Mr. Dalton

No, Sir. Even if they were, it would not prove anything.
