50. Captain Swinģlerasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer to what extent he permits civil servants of his Department to participate in local government; and why permission to be nominated for election to the Stafford Rural District 1792 Council was refused in the case of Mr. A. N. Hillier, a Customs and Excise officer, particulars of which have been sent to him.
§ Mr. DaltonThe rules regarding participation by civil servants in local government are at present being reviewed. I am anxious to give all reasonable facilities for such participation. I find that Mr. Hillier was given permission to stand in 1937 for the Gnosall Parish Council and the Stafford Rural District Council. I understand that permission was refused this year, owing to the very heavy pressure of work at Stafford, but I am looking further into the matter.
