HC Deb 08 April 1946 vol 421 cc1647-8
56. Air-Commodore Harvey

asked the Minister of Agriculture what has been the response of allotment holders to grow more vegetables since he made his broadcast on 22nd February, 1946.

Mr. T. Williams

From the information available it would appear that my appeal to allotment holders is meeting generally with a good response.

Air-Commodore Harvey

is the Minister aware that in many parts of the country a great number of allotments are derelict; and would he consider again, before it is too late, appealing to allotment holders, through the B.B.C. and through the Press, to cultivate their gardens and plots in the next two or three weeks?

Mr. Williams

I can assure my hon. Friend that we have made a nation-wide appeal, and the Prime Minister himself has appealed to local authorities to render all assistance and give every encouragement they can to would-be allotment holders.

Air-Commodore Harvey

In view of the great shortage of food and of the fact that there are only a few weeks left in which to plant, will the Minister consider making a further appeal?
