§ 73. Mr. Heathcoat Amoryasked the President of the Board of Trade why, as British manufacturers of rayon piece goods in producing for the home market are confined almost entirely to utility fabrics, it has been decided to allow imports from the Continent without any such restrictions; and if he is aware that this will handicap British manufacturers in the development of novelty fabrics.
§ Mr. BelcherAs has already been announced, the limited resumption of imports of rayon fabrics from France is primarily designed to assist France to gain exchange to pay for imports necessary for her economic rehabilitation. These imports will amount, during the remainder of this year, to about 5 per cent. of the rate of current production in this country of non-utility rayon fabrics which itself amounts to between one quarter and one-fifth of production of all types of rayon goods. I see no reason why the development of novelty fabrics should be prejudiced.
Mr. AmoryDoes the Minister agree that, small though the imports are at present, they should not be allowed to increase, because the whole future of the 1636 British textile industry depends on the most efficient possible production of high quality fabrics? Further, does he agree that if—
