HC Deb 08 April 1946 vol 421 cc1621-2
14. Mr. Turton

asked the Minister of Supply what is the number of persons at present employed at the royal ordnance depot at Melmerby, Yorkshire; and what is the weekly cost of maintaining this depot.

Mr. Wilmot

One hundred and twenty people are employed at this depot, which costs my Department £693 a week to operate.

Mr. Turton

Will the right hon. Gentleman make a further inquiry into this matter, to see whether a lot of public money is not being wasted by keeping this depot going? Can I have a reply?

Hon. Members

The Minister does not know.

Mr. Wilmot

I would prefer on security grounds to say as little as possible, but I can assure the hon. Gentleman that there is no waste.

Sir Waldron Smithers

Is that Russia?
