HC Deb 08 April 1946 vol 421 cc1643-4
97. Mr. Lipson

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many countries have not yet appointed their representatives on the Atomic Bomb Commission; which are they; and if he will consider suggesting that a definite date be now fixed for the first meeting of the Committee so that laggard countries may expedite the appointment of their representatives.

The Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. McNeil)

According to my information, the following countries have appointed their representatives on the United Nations Atomic Commission or their technical expert, or both: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, the Netherlands, Poland, United Kingdom and United States of America. As my hon. Friend was informed on 3rd April, the Secretary-General has taken steps to obtain the further necessary nominations, and I am not sure that in the circumstances it is desirable for any individual Government to intervene in the Secretary-General's responsibility for summoning the first meeting of the Commission.

Mr. Lipson

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that I asked which countries had not yet appointed their representatives?

Mr. McNeil

According to my information, China, Mexico and the Soviet Union have not yet appointed their representatives.
