asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the possibility of non-native settlement in the Nyika Plateau of Nyasaland has been examined; and, if so, with what result.

I have asked the Governor for a report on this subject, and I shall communicate with the hon. and gallant Member when I receive it.

Sir W. Wakefield

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the natives in that part of Nyasaland most urgently want European settlement there? Views to that effect were expressed to a recent Parliamentary delegation who visited that part of the country.

Mr. Hall

I must await the report from the Governor.
