HC Deb 07 November 1945 vol 415 cc1279-80
53. Lieut.-Colonel Byers

asked the Minister of Food whether he will authorise an extra cheese ration to members of a farmer's family employed on farms, similar to that now granted to agricultural workers.

Sir B. Smith

The special ration of cheese is allowed to certain categories of employees for whom it is impracticable to provide canteen or other catering facilities, and who require to take a packed meal with them to their work. I regret that I am unable to extend the concession to members of a farmer's family, who can usually return home for a mid-day meal if they wish.

Lieut.-Colonel Byers

Is the Minister aware that this is not only a question of packed meals, but a matter which concerns the energy-giving properties of the food? Is he prepared to reconsider it in this light?

Sir B. Smith

Not to give additional cheese to the farmer's family.
