HC Deb 20 March 1945 vol 409 c631
46. Mr. Evelyn Walkden

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware that a cheque for £638 sent to the Collector of Taxes, High Holborn, by a Blackpool taxpayer was returned to the sender because it was Is. 3d. short of the account owing; why a postal order was not asked for to cover this small amount; and what were the reasons for the return of this large cheque.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir John Anderson)

I cannot deal with the taxation liability of particular individuals by way of question and answer but I have written to my hon. Friend in reply to the letter which he sent me about this matter.

Mr. Walkden

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that he has since returned the cheque to me in the same letter?

Sir J. Anderson

I am aware that that particular cheque proved particularly elusive. I am looking into what happened.
