HC Deb 07 March 1945 vol 408 cc2013-4
38. Mr. Creech Jones

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what progress is being made in the Bahamas in connection with the legislation for the secret ballot.

Colonel Stanley

From personal discussion with the Governor and leading members of the Legislature during my recent visit to the Bahamas, I am satisfied that all concerned appreciate the urgency and importance of this matter. On 22nd January the Governor, in a message inviting the House of Assembly to reconsider this measure, expressed the confident belief that they would no longer withhold the secret ballot from the Out-Islands. That message was referred on 5th February to a Select Committee which has not yet reported.
