HC Deb 01 March 1945 vol 408 cc1553-4
43. Sir Waldron Smithers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department under what authority the civil police in the rural district of Dartford are visiting Home Guard officers with reference to their revolvers before the Home Guard have been disbanded.

Mr. H. Morrison

After the issue of orders at the end of last year for the "Standing Down" of the Home Guard instructions were given for all officially issued weapons to be withdrawn. Members of the Home Guard who used their own firearms for Home Guard purposes have been informed by the Commanding Officers of their units that they will not be allowed to retain their weapons unless they have a firearm certificate from the police. It is the clear duty of the police to investigate all such cases for the purpose of ascertaining whether there is contravention of the law.
