46. Captain Duncanasked the Prime Minister whether the attitude of the Government on the political situation in Yugoslavia, as recently announced by him, was reached after consultation with and in agreement with the U.S. Government.
§ The Deputy Prime Minister (Mr. Attlee)I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to the statement issued by the State Department on 23rd January, which is as follows:
This Government has not participated in the discussions concerning the agreement between Prime Minister Subasic and Marshal Tito for the establishment of a unified government in Yugoslavia. We have been kept informed of recent developments however and approve of the main objective namely to enable the Yugoslav Government in exile and the various elements within the country to work together within Yugoslavia in the tasks arising from the liberation.
Captain DuncanIs my right hon. Friend aware of the interest of many hon. Members, which can be exemplified by the number of questions in the House, about the position in Yugoslavia?
§ Mr. AttleeYes, Sir, I have noticed those questions.
§ Mr. RileyDoes not my right hon. Friend's reply mean that although the United States Government were not consulted regarding the Tito-Subasic agreement, they have approved of the policy of His Majesty's Government?
§ Mr. AttleeWe are in close touch.
