HC Deb 31 January 1945 vol 407 c1452
52. Dr. Little

asked the Minister of Food the amount of cereals now assigned to distillers for the production of alcoholic liquor; and what relation this bears to the amount given to the brewers and that used for the food of the people.

Colonel Llewellin

The percentages of utilisation during 1944–45 of all cereals for distilling, brewing and food are 0.9 per cent., 7.2 per cent. and 91.9 per cent., respectively.

Viscountess Astor

What does that mean?

Dr. Little

Does not my right hon. and gallant Friend agree that a further assignment of cereals for foodstuffs would be a great advantage to the country?

Colonel Llewellin

What it means is that 92 per cent. does go for food.

Viscountess Astor

How much goes for drink?

Colonel Llewellin

If I may do my hon. Friend's arithmetic for her, it is 8 per cent.
