HC Deb 23 January 1945 vol 407 c621
16. Mr. Higgs

asked the President of the Board of Trade the amount of coal utilised in making one ton of steel in this country and in America.

The Joint Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Supply (Mr. Peat)

I have been asked to reply. The amount of coal required, on the average, to produce a ton of heavy steel is about 2 tons in Great Britain and 1½ tons in the United States, the difference being mainly due to the higher grade ore available in the United States.
