HC Deb 18 January 1945 vol 407 cc357-8
51. Mr. Naylor

asked the Minister of Agriculture what supervision is exercised by his Department over the welfare arrangements for members of the W.L.A., especially in respect to small isolated groups working under the severe conditions of winter, often without protection or cover and without being given the amount of rest and refreshment necessary to counter the effects of such exposure.

Mr. T. Williams

Supervision is exercised through the Women's Land Army County Offices, which are responsible for investigating the proposed working and living arrangements before any Land Army member is supplied for employment. Each Land Army member when placed in work is put in touch with an approved local representative, to whom she can look for help in any personal difficulty. The representative visits regularly, usually once a month, to ensure that working conditions remain satisfactory and that worker and employer are mutually satisfied. If the hon. Member is aware of a particular instance where Land Army members appear to be working under unsuitable conditions and will provide details, my right hon. Friend will have investigation made.
