HC Deb 27 February 1945 vol 408 cc1208-9
3. Mr. Henderson Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for War what action he has taken as the result of his inquiries into the evidence submitted to him by the hon. Member for East Fife regarding regarding the unsatisfactory con- ditions of billets, bedding, ablution facilities, messing, pay, leave allowances and home leave suffered by members of the A.T.S. stationed in Egypt.

Sir J. Grigg

A copy of the letter my hon. Friend sent to me has been forwarded by air to the Commander-in-Chief, Middle East, and I await his report.

Mr. Stewart

In view of the rather disturbing nature of the report from this A.T.S. corporal, can my right hon. Friend indicate when a statement might be made on this matter?

Sir J. Grigg

No, I am afraid I cannot. It is a very long statement and it is almost unique in that a great many of the complaints have never been heard before, though the A.T.S. has been serving in Egypt for a quite a long time. I can assure my hon. Friend that there will be a thorough investigation.
